Podcast #245 – Susan Lahey Tells Us About Her Move to Port PortugalThis week I am speaking with my dear friend and colleague Susan Lahey. Susan is a freelance writer who has worked with me on all three of the Repurpose Your Career books. I had Susan originally on the podcast in episode 54 and then did an encore episode with an update in episode 122. Susan took you on her journey on how she went from a journalist to being a freelance writer. This is a much more difficult transition than you might think. In 2019, Susan decided to move her freelance writing business to Port Portugal after all three of her children had graduated from college. I wanted Susan to take you on her journey of both becoming an expat and setting up her business in Europe. This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. Check out the Career Pivot Community. I have chosen to do this because I have been repeatedly asked about safety in Mexico, and more specifically, the safety of driving across Mexico. I will break this down into what I do to prepare the car, then planning the route which we have used several times, and lastly the strategies we use on the road. Preparing the CarMy wife and I own a 2015 Subaru Outback which is mostly driven for our trips back and forth to Austin. I have it serviced by the Subaru dealer in Austin on every trip to the US. That means I get it serviced a lot more frequently than recommended. I had the battery die on the first trip down and I replaced it with a battery I purchased at AutoZone in Ajijic. I later replaced it again 2 years later while I was back in Austin. Other than the battery the car has performed flawlessly. The one thing you cannot plan for is flat tires. I have not had a flat tire on my car but I have had many flats on my bicycle using the same roads. As the car is all-wheel drive, it is not recommended you drive long distances using the small spare. I replaced all of the tires at about 45K miles, long before new tires were recommended, and had the best tire mounted on a new rim. That tire is now mounted on the roof in a Yakima rack as a spare I also have an electric pump, jumper cables, and a Durlast jump starter. I am prepared if I ever have a battery die or get a flat tire. This is important because Mexico is a vast and beautiful country where you may be miles from anything. Planning the RouteThe trip from Ajijic to Austin is about 950 miles and we have done this in 2 and 3 days. Do not attempt to do this one day because you never drive at night. There are 2 reasons you do not drive at night:
Take your time and enjoy the drive. Border CrossingNext is to pick your border crossing. The Customs and Border Protection Agency has an excellent website that will give you current and historical wait times entering the US. The wait times can be hours if you cross at the busiest time of day. This is only for entering the US from Mexico. We have now made six round trips from Ajijic and Austin. On the first three trips, we went through Laredo/Nuevo Laredo. There are many bridges to choose from and there is a large and efficient immigration office in Nuevo Laredo. We stopped crossing in Laredo as the highway between Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey has become too dangerous during the pandemic. Check out the US embassy security alert to learn more. We have crossed on the last two trips at Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras, which is now our preferred crossing point going both ways. Current RouteOur route now to Austin is:
The return route is:
Days of the Week to DriveWe stay on toll roads and federal highways. The toll roads are by far the best but they are not always available. These roads are built for truck traffic. The volume of truck traffic going from Central Mexico to the border and back is mind-boggling. The trucks do not exceed the speed limit unless their load is empty. Many trucks are pulling 2 trailers so they are pretty loaded down. In fact, passing through many of the mountains passes the trucks are going up pretty slowly. We like driving with truck traffic and have been told that is the safest time to travel. We always drive Monday – Thursday and crossing the border on Tuesday or Wednesday. The biggest safety risk is the border areas primarily around Nuevo Laredo. Our goal is always to cross the border as early in the day as possible and minimize the amount of time we spend in the border areas. Strategies for DrivingSince the beginning of the pandemic, we only stop for gas, which we do every 2-3 hours. We bring all of the food we need for the day with us. When we stop I buy between 300-400 Mexican Pesos worth of gas. This is one of the strategies for not getting scammed at the pump. You can learn more about this in the video from Two Expats in Mexico 5 Gas Station Scams to Watch Out for in Mexico. We have 3 groups of money in the car.
You may notice that we never mention using a credit or debit card. I ONLY use my debit card at major stores like Costco or at restaurants that I am a regular customer. I never use my credit card. Take Your TimeYou will notice that we do not plan on driving much more than 6 or 7 hours in Mexico. There are so many things that can delay you and remember about not driving at night. We have been delayed by the following:
This is Mexico, you need to be patient and to expect the unexpected. Lastly, I do not exceed the speed limit in general. Though I encountered very few police on the roads compared to the US and even fewer with radar guns, I do not exceed the speed limit. I like to get behind a truck that is going near the speed limit usually, 100 kph or 62 mph, and follow. Take your time and you will find this is an enjoyable trip! Psychologists vs. Psychiatrists: Differences Between the Two Careers published first on https://skillsire.weebly.com/ via Tumblr Psychologists vs. Psychiatrists: Differences Between the Two Careers Own Your Life, Career, and FutureAre you ready to Own Your Career, Life, and Future? I have been speaking with many job clubs and other organization leaders about what they are seeing with their constituents. Many have told me that as we hit the 18-month mark of the COVID-19 pandemic fatigue has set in. There is a perception that people in the 2nd half of life are not taking ownership and possibly giving up at least temporarily. At the same time, I have been reading a lot of books written about the future. This includes:
The common theme of all of these books is that now is the time to take ownership. Own your career, life, and future. Own Who You Are (Your Life)Michael Clinton’s book, Roar: Into the Second Half of Your Life (Before It’s Too Late) part II is called “Own Who You Are”. Michael starts this part of the book with the following: We all have a past. We all have baggage. We all have moments of woulda, coulda, and shoulda. W are all coming from that past to face our future. You are a composite of those experiences, and there’s not much you can do about them now. You have to own them as what makes you special and unique. As many of you have crossed the threshold of long-term unemployment, 6 months (many are way past that), now is the time to embrace where you are in your career. The pandemic has forced many to reaccess what they are doing in their career. Are they willing to let go of what has not worked in the last 18 months in finding employment and embrace what is available? In my discussions with job club leaders, what I have heard is that some have been going back to work in contract positions. This is not what they want. They want full-time employment with benefits and specifically health insurance. Others dread going back into the office for fear that they might get sick. Whatever the barriers might be you need to own it! Own Your CareerAndy Storch’s book, Own Your Career Own Your Life: Stop Drifting and Take Control of Your Future part I is called “Own Your Career”. Andy writes the following: For this book, when I say, “own your career” or “own your life,” that means taking full responsibility and being intentional with your actions. It means having an idea of where you want to go, making a plan, and then taking steps to get there. It means that you don’t wait for others to tell you what to do or where to go. It means you don’t blame others for your problems. Now is the time to reaccess where you want to go in the future. Andy talks about the need to set a vision. I know for all of my corporate careers I had no vision. I moved from job to job, made career pivots along the way but there was no overarching vision, only what I wanted to do next. Connect to PurposeLike having a vision does your career have a purpose? Does your career or more importantly your life have a “why”? Why are you doing what you are doing? I know for myself until I had my near-fatal bicycle accident nearly 20 years ago, I did not have a “why”. I did things that I was good at and got paid for. It was only during my recovery from the bicycle accident did I start questioning why I was doing what I was doing. I then spent the next 10 years figuring out what my purpose was. For me finding my purpose was really difficult and I largely did this inside my own head. I did not seek help like when I had done previously with big decisions. Finding my purpose? I did not know how to do that. I was used to just wandering around in my career. Own Your FutureDiana Wu-David’s book, Future Proof: Reinventing Work in the Age of Acceleration chapter 1 is called The Future of Work. Diana writes the following: Globalization, disruption, and longevity are coming together to transform the way we work and the way people see the future of work. Mostly, we see the future of work as bewildering. The perpetual mention of accelerating change gives us motion sickness. Our eyes glaze over reading the doomsday headlines in the press… That was written before the COVID-19 pandemic. I strongly suggest you listen to my conversation with Diana in the podcast episode, Future Proof: Reinventing Work in the Age of Acceleration with Diana Wu David [Podcast]. Pretty much everything Diana wrote before the pandemic is happening but only faster. Now is the time to take control of your future rather than let others control your future. Diana breaks down controlling your future into 3 steps:
Take time to carefully plan how you are going to plan and take control of your future in the post-COVID-19 world. Just Own It!Except for some epidemiologists, no one predicted what has happened over the last 18 months. Now is the time to own the situation you find yourself in and take action! Just like the Nike slogan, just do it, now I want to tell you just own it! What is your first step? Marc MillerLike what you just read? Share it with your friends using the buttons above.
