Practicing Active Listening SkillsHave you been practicing your active listening skills? My wife and I are back in Austin for a week to get some “stuff” done like getting the car registration renewed. I am very specifically working on practicing my active listening skills. When we were back in Austin in May to get vaccinated against COVID-19, I discovered that my active listening skills had deteriorated. Check out my podcast episode from the visit called Getting Back to Normal – My Observations from 26 Coffee Meetings [Podcast]. Specifically, I want to reconnect and awaken some dormant ties. I wrote about awakening dormant ties last week. Let me take you through my process that I hope you might find useful. OutreachI have found taking a broad-based approach to letting people know we are in town and open to a meeting is very effective. Several weeks ago, I posted on Facebook that we would be in Austin. By the way, I rarely post on Facebook. At the end of a post about our dear cat Rex passing away I mentioned we would be in Austin. Only those who read all the way to the end would know we are coming. I have set up a couple of meetings with some very dormant ties including someone I worked for over 30 years ago. As you could imagine I have a moderately large email list and I put out the word that I will be in Austin this week. This was on purposely short notice. Only those who are actively reading my weekly newsletter and live in Austin am I interested in speaking with. I want to discuss with them how I can improve my website, podcast, and/or newsletter. Lastly, I have emailed and called several people who I have known for years to who I want to reconnect. This includes one gentleman who the last time we met in May, I realized that I did a horrible job of listening. StrategyMy plan is to have a strategy on how I want to put my focus on the person I am meeting. For example, my former IBM manager left being my manager for another job. I completely lost track of where she went. My goal is to practice active listening skills to enable her to tell me her story. Another example, I will be meeting with a former client who survived the pandemic by taking contract work, and now has landed an excellent position. I want to hear how she managed to keep herself sane during the pandemic. I then want to know how she managed to land her current position. Focus and Practicing Active Listening SkillsI want to focus on the following active listening skills:
If I focus on these few and simple active listening skills, I am likely to get the practice I need. I am meeting with dormant, weak, and strong ties while I am in Austin. Cultural Studies: The Interdisciplinary Career Path It Provides published first on https://skillsire.weebly.com/ via Tumblr Cultural Studies: The Interdisciplinary Career Path It Provides Awaken Dormant Ties to Revive Your Job SearchMy good friend Thom Singer recently recorded a video, Awaken Dormant Ties (the future of business relationships) where he stated that: There is so much value in reaching out to people with who you used to be connected and rebuilding those relationships. The term format dormant ties come from a paper published by Rutgers University professor Daniel Levin in 2011. Dr. Levin’s research showed that it is much easier to reconnect and awaken dormant ties or relationships than it is to create new relationships. During the pandemic, I have reconnected with so many people from my past by simply picking up the phone and calling them. My first question is “how are you doing?”. This is not about asking someone for a job or a connection. This is truly reaching out to people you have not talked to in years and reconnecting and rekindling the relationship. Your thoughts are that these people will think it is strange and awkward that you’re calling. No, they won’t! Your Reputation is Frozen in TimeI wrote the post, How People Think of You May Be Frozen in Time, where I discussed a concept that I learned about from Carol Fishman Cohen, co-founder of iRelaunch. Past relationships remember us how we were and not how we are today. I want you to sit back and think about this. If someone sent you an email or even called you and said, “I was thinking of you today and wanted to know how you are doing,” would you say, “wow that person must be looking for something from me?” I do not think so. I think you would probably be excited to hear from someone. We have been isolated and socially distanced for a long time during this pandemic. Now is the time to awaken dormant ties. Strategy to Awaken Dormant TiesThom suggests a really easy way to get started. Go to LinkedIn and pull up your list of contacts. Pick a letter and Thom suggests “M”. You can then go through your list of contacts that begin with M and select 5-10 people that you will reach out to. These should be people that you had a real relationship with at one time. You could send them an email or pick up the phone and call them. If you call them you will likely get their voicemail but leave them a message saying, “I thought of you today and was wondering how you are doing.” Of those 5-10 people maybe a few will respond. What? Yes, not everyone is going to respond, and do not dwell on those that do not respond. Some may respond and say, ‘thank you for thinking of me’ but with no action on their part. Again, just move on to the next person. However, those that do respond, schedule a phone or Zoom call, or if they are local find a time for a coffee or beer meeting. The next day, pick another letter and do the same thing. After 26 days you may have reconnected with 50-100 people. Revive Your Job SearchIf you are part of the group that the Bureau of Labor Statistics labels “long term unemployed” this is a great way to revive your job search. Reaching out to people who are excited to hear from you is great for your morale. When you connect with these dormant ties, this is not about asking for help finding a job. It is all about reconnecting and reestablishing relationships. Once you have reestablished the relationship that is when you pull out the tried and true asking for AIR, or asking for advice, insights, and recommendations. I have been quoted many times that when you ask for advice from a connection, you will rarely be turned down. The advice you get might be something you already know or something that is not practical. You will likely need to have a lot of these AIR conversations to make real progress. Being Humble and VulnerableI wrote about another idea from Thom in my post, 7 Best Practices that Empower Your Career and Business. One of my favorites is “Talk with One Smart Person Every Day”. Thom’s speaking business completely collapsed back in March of 2020 when the meeting industry completely shut down. What Thom did was to reach out to “one smart person every day” and say, “here is my situation, what do you think I should do?” That is being humble and, more importantly, vulnerable. For most of us who have had successful careers until this pandemic slapped a lot of older workers in the face, it has been a pretty humbling experience. What many of us need is reconnecting relationships with people who can pick us up and move us along. I think you will find that taking this strategy will get you reinvigorated and wanting to have real conversations with real people. Now is the time to reach out and awaken dormant ties, and be humble and vulnerable. Are you willing to take action? Marc MillerLike what you just read? From when you’re young and looking for just any experience to when you’re in your prime of work. As we live longer and longer our career choices become more and more impactful. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an estimated 40 percent of people ages 55 and older were working or actively looking for work in 2014 and that is expected to increase rapidly through 2024 while the rates of those working under 55 are expected to remain the same. The number of Americans over the age of 65 is expected to double by 2060 from 52 million in 2018. Now more and more support has become available for older adults as they transition their careers at all stages of their lives. Retirement used to happen around one’s 60s, but these days people are living longer and healthier lives. As the baby boomer generation ages, many of them don’t want to retire or financially can’t. However, the kinds of work these older employees want to do and how they want to do it shifts dramatically. Finding work after 50 is important, especially at this time. Unemployment rates for those 55 and over leaped up during the pandemic from 2.6% in Feb. 2020 to 13.6% in April of 2020 according to the U.S. BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS. Leaders In Career Pivots and ShiftsCareer transitions for those over 50 are nothing new, but now there are multiple communities that support these transitions. A digital nomad means working remotely primarily for yourself. This allows you to work wherever you want. Marc is primarily speaking about working remotely outside of the U.S. However, the tips and tools he shares will also apply to those working within the states as well. Here are some things you will need to have or know to be a Digital Nomad:
If you are doing your digital work in the U.S., Marc suggests becoming a resident of South Dakota. He states that becoming a resident is easy and they have many services available that could be helpful to working remotely. Many services will give you a P.O. Box to use for mailing. You can also use family or friends to get your mail. Keep in mind that where you use your mailing address you will be paying that state’s income taxes. South Dakota does not have an income tax. Financials of a Digital NomadFinancials will be another topic to pay attention to when working remotely. If you are out of the U.S. it is recommended that you get a bank account in whatever country or place you are doing the majority of your work. There are a few services that will help with moving money around accounts.
Outside of the U.S. you also face exchange rates. On an ATM card, the exchange rates will not be good because you are getting a business-to-consumer rate. Using the above services gives you a business-to-business rate. If you want to bypass going to ATMs to figure out what the exchange rates are you can use Charles Schwab International Money Market Account. They will give you a reasonable exchange rate and will refund all your ATM fees. TechnologyTime ZonesTime Zones will become a big issue. It is important to pay attention to your time zones and your calendar. Daylight savings isn’t followed by every state or country and some have different rules for following. Marc uses Schedule Once to help keep him organized and aware of the times. InternetInternet might be a complication when not living in the U.S. Marc recommends having a few plans or options for the internet. To get fast internet that works well enough you will have to go through multiple lines or connections. You will also need to get used to using a VPN or virtual private network. VPNUsing a VPN will allow you to access certain sites and networks. For example, you will need a VPN to access several online banking sites. A VPN will also allow you to stream sites and videos such as Netflix or Hulu. Marc’s last recommendation is to use Dropbox or Google Drive. He uses this to keep all of his important legal documents. This is necessary especially being outside of the U.S. and needing access to all of your information. TravelYour last obstacle will be traveling and getting back to the U.S. Marc suggests always having a plan on how you will travel in an emergency.
